Industry report:

This industry includes companies that wholesale warm air heating and air conditioning equipment and supplies. Industry products include air conditioning equipment (except room units), air pollution control equipment, electric heating furnaces, humidifiers and dehumidifiers (except portable units), and ventilating equipment.

According to Dun & Bradstreet's Industry Reports, there were 6,836 establishments in the wholesale warm air heating and air conditioning equipment and supplies (HVAC) industry in 2010. The number of employees totaled 57,956, and total industry revenues were $10.8 billion in 2009. Most establishments were small, with more than 76 percent employing fewer than 10 people. The industry was geographically distributed throughout the United States, with California, Florida, and Texas having the largest number of establishments in the industry. New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio also had strong concentrations of facilities in this classification. Florida was the number-one state in terms of revenues in the industry, accounting for about 22 percent of the nation's total, followed by Texas (10 percent), Maryland (6 percent), and California (5 percent).

The industry grew in the late twentieth century, with the U.S. Census Bureau reporting 799 establishments manufacturing equipment for air conditioning, warm air heating, and commercial and industrial refrigeration in the late 1990s. These operations shipped $22.9 billion worth of merchandise, spent $12.5 billion on materials, and invested $569 million in buildings and other structures, machinery, and equipment in 1997.

In the early 2000s, growth came from selling through nontraditional channels such as the Internet. Changing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations also helped sales, since the phasing out of older refrigerants created a demand for replacement units. Supermarkets, restaurants, and high-rise buildings were among those converting to new refrigeration and air conditioning systems through the 2000s.

In the early 2010s Dun & Bradstreet estimated that the main product of 2,898 establishments was warm air heating and air conditioning equipment. These operations shipped $2.7 billion worth of merchandise and employed 25,945 people. Products in this category accounted for about 25 percent of total industry revenues in 2010.

The second largest category in terms of number of establishments was air conditioning and ventilation equipment and supplies, which was the main product at 942 facilities. These operations shipped $2.9 billion worth of merchandise and employed 7,000 people. Products in this category accounted for more than 27 percent of total industry sales.

Warm air heating equipment and supplies were the main products at 921 establishments. These operations shipped $2.0 billion worth of merchandise and employed 7,638 people. Products in this category accounted for 19 percent of total industry revenues.

Other major categories in this industry included air filters, with 267 establishments employing 1,620 people and generating $334.5 million in revenues; air pollution control equipment and supplies, with 291 establishments employing 1,599 and generating $244.8 million in sales; electrical heating equipment, with 137 establishments employing 1,280 people and generating $284.4 million in sales. Smaller segments of the industry included electric furnaces, automotive air conditioners, and air conditioning compressors.

Although the economic recession of the late 2000s and resulting fall in housing starts negatively affected the industry, some saw signs of a recovery by 2010. According to Heating, Airconditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International, for example, sales for North American HVACR distributors were up almost 8 percent in May 2010 as compared to May 2009, the third month in a row that saw an increase.

In 2010, companies whose primary business was wholesale HVAC products included ACR Group Inc. of Houston, Texas. Previously known as Time Energy Systems, ACR was owned by Watsco, which had overall sales of $2.0 billion in 2009. Another important company, Gensco Inc. of Tacoma, Washington, had 500 employees and offered more than 15,000 wholesale products.

Of other diversified companies that made products in this category, W.W. Grainger Inc. of Lake Forest, Illinois, was one of the largest with 18,000 employees and sales of $6.2 billion in 2009. The company's Grainger Division, a nationwide distributor of air compressors, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and components, and other tools and equipment, served more than 2 million customers and had several hundred branches located nationwide. Ferguson Enterprises Inc. of Newport News, Virginia, was another large, diversified company with interests in HVAC wholesale. The company had almost 17,000 employees and revenues of $9.1 billion in 2009.

Other industry leaders included US Airconditioning Distributors, of City of Industry, California, and AAF-McQuay Inc. of Louisville, Kentucky.
