Companies in this industry

Industry report:

Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of electrical household goods are classified in SIC 5064: Electrical Appliances, Television and Radio Sets. Establishments primarily engaged in the wholesale distribution of precious metal flatware are classified in SIC 5094: Jewelry, Watches, Precious Stones, and Precious Metals.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the home furnishing wholesale industry is divided into four categories of establishments: sellers of china, glassware, and crockery; sellers of linens, domestics, draperies, and curtains; sellers of floor coverings; and sellers of other types of home furnishings. Home furnishings and floor coverings equally shared about one third each of the overall market, and decorative home furnishings and supplies represented 10 percent in the late years of the first decade of the 2000s. Household china firms numbered 862, with more than $3.12 billion in sales; firms selling linens, domestics, draperies, and curtains numbered 1,832 and earned more than $9.65 billion; and floor coverings firms numbered 3,638 and sold more than $27.6 billion in product.

Furniture and home furnishing wholesale distributors reported revenues of nearly $52.7 billion in 2007 and were the smallest of 18 sectors of wholesaler-distributors. Total sales of all wholesaler-distributors reached $3.6 trillion, representing an 8.9 percent increase over 2004. Grocery and foodservice distributors led in revenue, followed by oil and gas products distributors, pharmaceutical wholesalers, and industrial distributors.

By 2009, firms involved in wholesaling home furnishings numbered 7,656, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, and employed 99,887 people. This workforce earned approximately $4.5 billion in pay while generating nearly $53.4 billion in revenue. The industry was highly fragmented, with no companies commanding a dominant market share.

According to a 2011 report by IBISWorld, just over 24 percent of firms in the wholesale household furnishings industry were located in the southeast United States. Together this region, combined with the West and Mid-Atlantic regions, accounted for 68 percent of all firms in the industry. The industry was expected to continue on the road to recovery following the economic downturn of the late 2000s, and, as IBISWorld reported, "Rising consumer sentiment and household disposable income will encourage consumers to spend on industry items that they had delayed purchasing during the recession." In addition, "Rising import levels will likely strengthen the role of wholesalers as distributors" as the industry grows steadily through the mid-2010s.
