Company description

Lockheed Martin Corporation formed in 1995 by combining the businesses of Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta Corporation. Allan and Malcolm Loughead flew the first Lockheed plane over San Francisco Bay in 1913 and Martin Marietta traces its roots back 1909, when aviation pioneer, Glenn L. Martin, organized a company around a modest airplane construction business. Lockheed Martin has grown into a major airframe supplier to U.S. military and commercial customers. Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., the company operates in four business segments: aeronautics; electronic system; information systems and global services; and space systems. The aeronautics segment develops, manufactures and upgrades advanced military aircraft, including combat and air mobility aircraft and unmanned air vehicles. The company's major fighter aircraft programs include: the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, the F-22 Raptor and the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The electronic systems segment develops and integrates hardware and software solutions to ensure the mission readiness of armed forces and government agencies worldwide. The information systems and global services segment provides software and systems engineering for space, air and ground systems. This segment also provides logistics, mission operation support, peacekeeping, and nation-building services for a wide variety of defense and civil government agencies in the U.S. and abroad. The space systems segment develops and manufacturers satellites, strategic and defensive missile systems and space transportation systems, including activities related to the Space Shuttle and its planned replacement.
