Smithfield Foods Inc. began as a pork processing operation called The Smithfield Packing Company, founded in 1936 by Joseph W. Luter and his son, Joseph W. Luter Jr. The company is the largest pork processor and hog producer in the world. Smithfield Foods has five reporting segments: pork, international, hog production , other and corporate. The pork segment consists mainly of three wholly-owned U.S. fresh pork and packaged meats subsidiaries. The international segment is comprised mainly of meat processing and distribution operations in Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom as well as the company's interests in meat processing operations, mainly in Western Europe, Mexico and China. The hog production segment consists of hog production operations located in the United States, Poland and Romania as well as interests in Mexico. The other segment is comprised of turkey production operations, the company's interest in Butterball LLC, live cattle operations and interests in live cattle joint venture operations. Butterball products are sold in 20 countries, including the United States, Mexico, China and Russia, and are available through retail, deli and foodservice channels. The corporate segment provides management and administrative services to support other segments.
