Company description

The Tribune Company was founded in 1847 and incorporated in Illinois in 1861. After corporate restructuring in 1968, the company became a holding company incorporated in Delaware. The company is engaged in newspaper publishing, television and radio broadcasting and entertainment, and is divided into two segments, with newspaper publishing acting as one segment and broadcasting and entertainment acting as the other. Both segments operate primarily in the United States. The company's primary daily newspapers in the publishing business segment are the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Newsday, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Orlando Sentinel, The Sun, Hartford Courant, The Morning Call and Daily Press. In the broadcasting/entertainment segment, the company's major television stations include 14 of the CW Television Network affiliates, six of the FOX Network television affiliates, an ABC television affiliate in New Orleans, and the WGN-AM radio station in Chicago. Additionally, the company owns the Chicago Cubs baseball team, which it acquired in 1981, and Tribune Entertainment, a company that distributes its own programming together with programming licensed from third parties. In 2007, the company's board of directors approved of a newly-formed Tribune Employee Stock Ownership plan (ESOP), which lead to the company becoming wholly owned by the ESOP.
