Nov. 29--As unpleasant as layoffs are, there can be a silver lining for those who survive.

The days and weeks after a corporate cutback become a natural time for those left behind to think about the next move, whether it's a new job or a new career. Or it's an opportunity for repositioning at work by offering to take on more responsibility.

"It's a time when people take stock and examine what it is they want in a job," said John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a Chicago-based firm that counsels job seekers. It's also the time to look at your financial situation and get ready for the next round of layoffs or buyout opportunities.

It's also a time of action.

If you'd like to change careers or move up to something bigger and better, consider signing up for classes you need or picking up key skills that you lack, Challenger said. …
