Home Alone but not home free on sales. (video tape rental) (General Merchandise)

Retailers are set to go the extra mile to cash in on the video release of Home Alone this summer.

In an effort to boost consumer excitement about the hot title and to spur sales, retailers are starting campaigns involving window posters, reservation sign-up sheets and even lighted marquees.

The major box-office family hit, with a street release date of Aug. 22, from FoxVideo, is expected to do well as a sell-through title, retailers told Supermarket News.

"Home Alone should be a hot sell-through title. With the good retail price that it will carry, we expect to sell quite a few of them," said Ellie Sweeney, video buyer, Shaw's Supermarkets, East Bridgewater, Mass.

The major advertising push behind the release should help insure a healthy sales response from consumers, Sweeney said.

"We're going to carry rental and sell-through copies in all stores. There's so much advertising for it that you almost don't have to put a large extra promotional push behind it."
