Owner not liable for contractor employee's fall.(Law & Liability)

IN 1996, DAE JULIE INC. DECIDED TO EXPAND AND remodel its candy-manufacturing plant in Illinois. It hired Hill Mechanical Group to perform mechanical, sheetmetal, and pipefitting work on the project. No written contract was signed. Dae Julie hired other contractors to perform other aspects of the job.

Farhad Behrouz was Dae Julie's manager of engineering at the plant and served as the project manager for the project. His role was to make sure the project was completed on time and specifications were followed.

Behrouz had the authority to stop Hill's work if he found it to be unsafe, but he said that Hill told him that it conducted its own safety meetings.

During construction, Hill conducted weekly employee-safety meetings at the site. …
