THE MADISON WISC PLANT of Ohmeda (Murray Hill, NJ) has improved the productivity of its machines and reduced lost time by installing a computerized tool management system four years ago.

The plant produces a range of different models of anesthesia machines for US and international markets. Many models are produced to both inch and metric sizes and, further, to meet the country-to-country medical standards, and there are variations within the standard models. For example, some tapped holes must have right-hand threads for one country and left-hand threads for another.

This product variety for the plant has produced a relatively heavy requirement for tools for the machining of prismatic and rotational parts. …
