Advances in thermal cutting

Several new developments in thermal cutting and related equipment also were unveiled at the AWS Show.

Among the new systems was Hypertherm's (Hanover, NH) latest in water-injection plasma-arc cutting, the HT750. It won't be commercially available until this September or so, but this 750-Amp system promises six times greater than normal electrode life using oxygen as the fuel gas, as in cutting mild steel to 1-in. thick. Using nitrogen instead, the system will cut stainless steel and aluminum alloys as thick as 3 in.

Mg Systems (Menomonee Falls, Wisc) introduced MetalMaster, a 100-Amp (50-Amp and 150-Amp, optionally) CNC plasma-arc cutting system for sheet and light plate (to 1/2-in. …
