Cutting machines seen at Westec Westec '91, at the Los Angeles Convention Center March 18-21, saw the introduction to the US market of a number of basic NC machine tools for metalcutting, including popular--size, price--competitive, machining centers, NC lathes, and NC cylindrical, grinders.

With some exceptions, exhibitors did not display new, high-technology machines this year. Sponsored for the second time by four organizations (SME, ASM Int'l, AMTDA, and NMTBA), the 28th annual show as attended by 29,078 people, down from the 35,000 level of the last two years. The technical sessions were attended by 588 people, a big drop from recent years.

There were new small machining centers and also new drill-tap centers at the show, but new large-size machines were few. …
