IN A WRITE-UP TITLED, "MOSQUITOES VS. ENGINE," EDITORS conceded that the mosquito problem in Missouri must have been even worse than it was in "the wilds of New Jersey." In a suburb of St. Louis, the pests had completely shut down an engine.

The July 30, 1903, issue quoted the story as told by the local Suburb's paper: "For several days, the engine had run less smoothly than the engineer had liked, but he had difficulty discovering the trouble. …
