Equal--opportunity advertising. (100 Years Ago In ... American Machinist).

IN JULY 1903, AMERICAN MACHINIST HAD A REALLY PLEASANT problem--its front-cover advertising was booked up for all 52 of its 1904 issues, and advertisers were anxious to buy every established ad and secure spots for 1905.

Editors devoted a few paragraphs in the July 2, 1903, issue to let advertisers know AM's policy to keep the front-cover ads reasonably priced and available to all manufacturers.

"If this demand continues for 1905, some of those using the space in 1904 will have to skip a year... These spaces are not transferable except through this office and advertisers have no right to sell them. …
