WINNING THE 2000 MALCOLM Baldrige National Quality award was a great honor for Spicer Driveshaft Mfg. Inc. of Pottstown, Pa., because the company prides itself on producing perfect parts. The shop, a subsidiary of Dana Corp., manufactures automotive driveline components, and its grinding of bearing races for the ends of journal crosses--which make up universal-joint kits--reflects this overriding preoccupation with quality.

"We do 100% part inspection of all our bearing races," says Bill Schutt, Spicer manufacturing engineering manager. "Given the volumes we run, manual inspection is out of the question, and inspecting at the end of the production line is too late to prevent scrap. …
