IT TOOK TWO TEST CUTS TO SELL Tech Tool & Mold on new EDM equipment. And after everything was said and done, the Meadville, Pa., precision tooling and mold-building shop added a third-shift, lights-out operation that cut delivery time, improved performance, and, according to Mark Hanaway, the company's director of marketing, made the company a global contender.

The first test was burning 0.007/0.008-in. ribs in a Christmas-tree-patterned insert tensioner using only the C axis on a Charmilles Roboform 35P EDM. The burn took 22 min as compared to a previous process at 50 min/piece.

For the second test, the same machine burned a 0.700-in.-deep rib tapered to 0.016 in. …
