CNC punch press aids prototyping Purchasing a CNC punch press, the kind used for multiple hole punching and nibbling of sheetmetal, helped Cole Tool & Die (CT&D) of Mansfield, Ohio, win a prototyping job, which in production would involve multiple stamping operations.

About two years ago, the stamping-die manufacturer bid on several drawn prototype panels for a washer/dryer that the Laundry Div of White Consolidated Industries was considering introducing. Because WCI wanted to assess how well prepainted sheet steel of various coatings would holdup in production, the job called for unusually large quantities of each panel and many other external and internal parts, 57 in all. …
