MANTH-BROWNELL OF KIRKVILLE, N.Y., IS CONSIDERED one of the largest manufacturers of turned parts in North America. The shop needed a more affordable solution for an internal grip in a pickoff spindle on a EuroTurn 6/32 6-spindle screw machine with a 32-mm through-hole capacity. Instead of opting for an I.D.-pick-off attachment, the shop incorporated a less-expensive special expanding collet.

The predicament arose from a job involving brass parts with thread milling and back work. Gripping the part's O.D. distorted the threads, and unfortunately, the shop's EuroTurn had only a factory O.D.-pick-off attachment.
