A DONOR'S STORY

Patti McRoberts had always been a giving person. So her husband wasn't at all surprised when she offered him one of her kidneys after his kidneys started to fail.

At the time, she was 41, healthy, vivacious, a professional model and an accomplished pianist and soprano.

"She was just full of grace," said her husband, Phil McRoberts, 54. "She was a graceful and kind and wonderful individual."

Patti McRoberts' good intentions took a tragic turn July 31, 2000. During the transplant, a surgeon at St. Mary's Mercy Medical Center in Grand Rapids, Mich., mistakenly cut her aorta, the main artery carrying blood throughout the body, according to allegations in a lawsuit filed against the surgeon and hospital. …
