For a guy whose baseball career pretty much ended in Little League, Tom Adelman possesses a major-league change-up.

After a critically acclaimed stint as a rock critic and novelist, the Quincy resident has hit opening day with "The Long Ball" (Little, Brown; $24.95), a colorful tale of baseball's seminal 1975 season and, for Red Sox fans, star-crossed World Series.

"I wanted to create a unique experience, a different type of storytelling in the baseball world," said Adelman, 39, a lifelong Los Angeles Dodgers fan.

Perhaps this saga, which culminated in Fenway frustration courtesy of the Cincinnati Reds, required the storytelling talents of an outsider and not the inside-baseball recount by a sportswriter. …
