Rep backs LNG plan.(Business)


A key lawmaker yesterday endorsed a proposal to build an LNG facility on Boston Harbor's Outer Brewster Island and filed legislation to start the bidding process on the controversial project.

Rep. Brian Dempsey (D-Haverhill), chairman of the Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy Committee, said the idea by AES Corp. to hollow out the deserted, state-owned island and store liquefied natural gas there is a "sound proposal."

Though Dempsey's bill allows other firms to bid on building a facility on Outer Brewster, the legislation would specifically exclude LNG companies already doing business in the area - a move that would exclude Distrigas from bidding on the project. …
