NAB2009 post tools preview.(NAB 2009 POSTPRODUCTION PREVIEW)

As we continue our NAB coverage in this issue, now moving to preview the postproduction tools at the show, we see many of the same technology trends developing in post as we did in production: Manufacturers are focusing on the continuing evolution and improvement of file-based and tapeless workflows, the introduction of higher-capacity systems, and the integration between solutions. For more on the NAB conference and expo, be sure to check www.videography.com, where we'll be producing daily news updates from the show floor.

The 1 BEYOND EzHDSAN is a plug-and-play SAN that can provide up to 96TB of RAID 6 protected storage, allowing real-time multi-stream HD editing for up to 14 simultaneous users. The system starts with an eight-disk model with 16TB and can scale to 24, 48 or 96TB. Ideally suited to handle processor-intensive formats and tasks, HexDFlex brings, for instance, great efficiencies in the editorial and finishing process of RED-originated projects. Using the power of its 16 processors, HexDFlex can edit native RED R3D footage at 2K resolution in real time and switch to a native 4K finish without moving or transcoding native video. Its processor power ensures that rendering is unnecessary until the final deliverable, and final render times are shortened considerably.

ADOBE Creative Suite 4 Production Premium makes its NAB Show debut after bowing last September. ATTO's FastStream storage controller and Fibre Channel host adapters provide the infrastructure for an affordable small workgroup SAN that enables collaborative workflows with RAID storage and delivers the throughput to handle multiple streams of HD video. For RAID-protected editing in direct-attached environments, ATTO offers ExpressSAS RAID adapters, which are designed for high-bandwidth workflows to add parity RAID to direct-attached JBOD storage and offer a lower-cost storage expansion alternative to expensive RAID arrays. Celerity 8Gb Fibre Channel host adapters deliver up to 6400MB/s for data-intensive workflows such as 4K, 2K, HD and SD video editing. Next-generation 6Gb SAS/SATA technology will be featured with ExpressSAS SAS/SATA host adapters and FastStream SC 8200.
