Metropolitan dense wavelength division multiplexing solutions took center stage at the Optical Fiber Communications '99 Conference in San Diego during the week of Feb. 22-26. A day after Lucent Technologies [LU] of Murray Hill, N.J., launched its metro DWDM system, Nortel Networks [NT] of Ontario, Canada, threw its hat into the ring.

On Feb. 23, Nortel's OPTera Solutions division began marketing the OPTera Metro, an open DWDM system that provides up to 32 channels of protected bandwidth or 64 channels of unprotected bandwidth. The Metro provides 80 Gbps of capacity when it is configured for 32 protected channels and 160 Gbps of bandwidth when configured for 64 unprotected channels. …
