NORTEL BUYS CAMBRIAN, PICKS UP METRO WDM SOLUTION.

Wavelength division multiplexing technology is predicted to begin appearing in local exchange carriers' networks in 1999, but Nortel Networks [NT] of Brampton, Ontario is taking steps to make the forecast a reality. The company announced Dec. 9 the purchase of Cambrian Systems Corp., a privately held company based in Kanata, Ontario.

Cambrian Systems developed WDM technology designed to speed the flow of data traffic between businesses in metropolitan areas and carrier backbones.

"Our overall goal with the purchase is that we were working on a metro WDM solution, but this purchase provides use with the ability to deliver the solution earlier - nine to 12 months earlier," says James Frodsham, director of optical networks at Nortel. …
