COMPANIES SHIFT FOCUS TO INCLUDE METRO DWDM

The race to speed long-haul transmission and increase bandwidth garners the glamour in the fiber optics industry, but several companies are looking to metropolitan dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) applications as a new area of focus.

"Metro and long-haul are two completely different markets and systems," says Solomon Wong, assistant vice president of marketing for Ontario, Canada-based Cambrian Systems Corp. "You can't take the thinking and the technology for long-haul and just lay it over a metro application and think it will work. A lot of companies still think that way."
