LUCENT FILES PATENT SUIT AGAINST CISCO SYSTEMS.

The emerging rivalry between Lucent Technologies [LU] and Cisco Systems Inc. [CSCO] jumped from the research labs to the courtroom with Lucent's patent-infringement lawsuit against the computer networking equipment manufacturer.

The suit alleges San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco infringed eight patents related to data networking. The patents cover Bell Labs- developed technology associated with routers, frame relay network equipment and asynchronous transfer mode equipment.

"After numerous attempts to negotiate with Cisco, we were left with no other recourse but to file suit," says Michael Greene, Lucent president of intellectual property. "We license our patents to many companies in the industry, and our goal is to receive fair value for Bell Labs' discoveries and innovations. …
