Northern Telecom, Fore Systems 'raise the bar' with ATM deal. (contract to manufacture new asynchronous transfer mode products, ComNet '95) (includes related article on new asynchronous transfer mode and ComNet '95)

Northern Telecom (NT) and Fore Systems unveiled an agreement last week at ComNet '95 in which they hope to develop new asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) products and to position themselves in the lead position for this still small but rapidly growing fiber-based switching business. Fore Systems claims it now has 65 percent of the estimated $300 million worldwide ATM local area network (LAN) market.

"This agreement allows us to raise the bar with regard to ATM offerings," William Connor, NT's vice president of global enterprise networks, told us at the Washington, D.C., conference. While ATM remains a nascent market, its growth is expected to be enhanced significantly by a separate ComNet '95 announcement. The Frame Relay Forum announced completion of the Frame Relay/ATM PVC Network Interworking Implementation Agreement, an important milestone in enabling frame relay data and control information transport using an ATM backbone. …
