Redback retools platforms from servers to parallel 42-Gbit switches.(Company Business and Marketing)

SUNNYVALE, CALIF. - Redback Networks Inc. will address the move among service providers to build MegaPoPs (Points of Presence) and GigaPoPs by scaling its own service-provisioning platforms from first-generation Pentium servers to highly parallel 42-Gbit switches.

Because high-speed switch chips from the likes of PMC-Sierra/Abrizio were not ready in time for the new switch prototype, Redback developed its own non-blocking switching fabric, which is implemented on three separate switch cards and a fourth card for system redundancy in the new SMS 10000 switch.

Redback's acquisition of Siara Systems Inc. late last year will not lead to a single large system with optical interfaces, as some analysts anticipated. …
