Weather Is Iffy; Crowds Are Antsy

As thousands of visitors funnel into the city, balloonists are poised for a launch that could make the Guinness Book of World Records.

But winds may prove to be a tether on the opening day of this year's Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

National Weather Service meteorologists were predicting 20- to 30-mph winds, with gusts of 40 mph, in the metro area this morning. Fiesta officials won't decide until this morning whether to launch today's mass ascension, scheduled to start at 7 a.m.

At last count, 1,011 balloons and 1,200 pilots representing 27 countries were registered for the 29th annual show, billed as the largest ballooning event in the world. …
