Honeycomb Pores To Aid Chip-Making

University of New Mexico professor Jeff Brinker has been playing with soap bubbles for years.

Now he and his colleagues have mixed them with silicon dioxide the stuff in beach sand and developed a new technique for building some of the tiniest structures ever made.

By adding ultraviolet light to the mix, the scientists showed they could precisely control the size of honeycomb-like pores a thousandth the size of the tiniest features etched on today's best computer chips.

That's smaller and more precise than the tiniest hole you could drill in the best micromachine labs in the world, Brinker said in a recent interview. …
