Brie Rippner paused for a moment in her post-match interview Friday to do the calculations.

Yes, said Rippner, who had just won her quarterfinal contest with Holly Parkinson 6-2, 6-2 at the Coleman Vision USTA Challenger tennis tournament, it has been almost a year to the week since she had finished a series of surgical procedures that would make most wince, if not cringe.

But Rippner, who had two operations on three herniated discs over a four-month period last year, isn't a grizzled veteran rebounding from a bad back for one last try at the pro circuit. Instead, at only 20 years old, Rippner is part of a new crop of young, big-serving Americans whose presence has impacted the Challenger women's event in Albuquerque. …
