If the daytime temperatures seem cooler, and there's a bit of nip in the nighttime air, it's probably time for the annual ritual of winterizing your swamp cooler and setting up your furnace.

If you just don't want to mess with it, or if you're afraid of stomping around on the roof, most plumbing, heating and cooling companies will gladly perform this service. Prices vary from $55 to more than $90, so it's probably a good idea to call around before making an appointment.

Homeowners who don't mind a hands-on approach to home maintenance may feel foolish plunking down a wad of cash for something that is, quite frankly, pretty darn easy to do themselves. …
