Colder forecast, increase in natural gas prices fuel higher demand for firewood

A spike in natural gas prices and a forecast of chilly winter weather have got New Mexicans buying tons of firewood. Area wood dealers say demand is climbing, and so are prices.

"Since it got a little cold on Sept. 25, and once it was mentioned that natural gas was going to be doubled, business has been very good," said Angela Romero, vice president of A-1 Firewood in Albuquerque, a 15-year-old business that is a major firewood supplier in the Albuquerque area.

"We delivered maybe about 20 cords a day last year. We're a lot busier this year. We're delivering about 30 to 40 cords a day," she said. …
