Last year's New Mexico State Fair wasn't even so-so.

Instead of an increase, instead of even holding the line on attendance, the fair lost ground. About 20,000 fewer people than attended in 1998 went to the fair in 1999.

The event is like some of those giant vegetables on display. Keeping it from withering on the vine and keeping it growing calls for careful cultivation.

It's growing again. The gate is up by 36,000 visitors to almost 660,000. A large part of the fair's rebound can be attributed to the decision to cultivate a key segment of visitors, the families, and to weed out the noxious elements that threaten the fair's "G rating. …
