Education Reform Requires Cooperation.(Editorial Page)


Albuquerque teachers and the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce acknowledge they agree on several ideas for education reform. But this week's dramatic break between the two groups points up that both have made mistakes in moving toward reform.

The chamber erred in failing to put teachers on key reform panels: on the committee it established to write its report on education and in the groups it set up to make detailed recommendations on reform.

The teachers' union went too far when it aired its dissatisfaction with that shortcoming and its dissatisfaction with the resulting report and recommendations by canceling its chamber membership. …
