LAS CRUCES A New Mexico State University poll of voters statewide shows Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush in a dead heat with less than five weeks to go before the presidential election.

The Sept. 26-28 poll of 600 likely voters showed Gore, a Democrat, favored by 42.3 percent of respondents and Bush, the Republican candidate, by 42.2 percent.

The poll, conducted by members of Professor Jose Z. Garcia's government and politics class, has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points, Garcia said.
