Sky Survey Will Be 'Most Valuable' Ever

APACHE POINT New Mexico State University has joined some of the nation's leading astronomy research institutions in a project to map the heavens, university officials announced Thursday.

The news came during dedication ceremonies for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, an international effort based in the mountains of southern New Mexico.

The decision by university officials to contribute $1 million allows NMSU researchers to join scientists from some of the most prestigious universities in the world on the highly anticipated project.

More than 100 scientists and dignitaries gathered at the Apache Point Observatory for the dedication, which formally kicks off a five-year mission to map the sky in more detail than ever attempted. …
