Overcrowding Leads To Sentence Reviews

Bernalillo County Detention Center director John Dantis said Thursday the jail has cut its population by about 100 inmates over the past 10 days or so. And that's happened without releasing a large number of them into an intensive out-of-jail program called "community custody."

A federal judge last week ruled the overcrowded jail in Downtown Albuquerque can have no more than 586 inmates by Oct. 30. Dantis said inmate counts were in the 840-860 range about ten days ago, but the number Thursday was 741.
