First City Jazz Festival Aims To Educate.

Under the auspices of his nonprofit Open Arts Foundation, jazz guitarist and composer Bruce Dunlap has organized the first annual Santa Fe Jazz International Music Festival. The event or, more precisely, events will bring to New Mexico some of the world's finest jazz and world music artists.

Heavy hitter artists who will perform this month at the James Little Theater include Kenny Werner, Marc Copland, Bill Frisell, Jai Uttal and Dave Holland.

In a recent interview, Dunlap kept stressing the educational aspects of the festival, its uniqueness and the overriding emphasis on quality. The Journal North recently caught up with Dunlap to discuss his rather ambitious plans.

Why is the festival so ambitious? As an event organizer with some insight into this, 34 events over 16 days seems a bit masochistic to me.
