Art Show Winner Calls Himself 'Dedicated Amateur'.(Arts)

* Frank Trainer garners Best of Show for his etching in the 12th Annual Corrales Fine Arts Show

Frank Trainer at 78 is enjoying his artistic second career with a Best of Show award for his "Corrales Bosque" etching in the 12th Annual Corrales Fine Arts Show at the historic Old San Ysidro Church.

Trainer also won an honorable mention for his "Old One II" etching.

"I am gratified that people find value in my work, but I see myself as a dedicated amateur," Trainer said in a phone interview.

He's a self-taught artist who loves to draw. His first career was the study and practice of geology with undergraduate work at the University of Virginia and post-graduate work at Harvard where he received a Ph.D.

Since retiring he has been drawing and for the past two years studying printmaking with Regina Held at the New Grounds Print Workshop in Nob Hill.

"I enjoy working with Regina and have learned a lot in a short period," Trainer said. …
