Sartans' Loss May Serve as Wake-Up Call.

It is Espanola Valley's misfortune to be running into the St. Pius Sartans this particular week.

The defending Class AAA football champions are hurting as they prepare for their District 2AAAA opener at 1 p.m. Saturday against the visiting Sundevils (1-4) at Milne Stadium.

St. Pius (4-1) fell from the ranks of the unbeaten last Friday when it lost 13-7 at Lovington.

"We played our worst game," St. Pius coach San Juan Mendoza said. "A lot of mental mistakes."

The mental was compounded by the physical this week.

On Wednesday, tailback Billy Styers, perhaps the team's most dangerous offensive player, was lost for the season with a broken ankle. …
