Albuquerque Public Schools wants balloonists to avoid its campuses this year, citing a new safety policy.

The district in June 1999 had added aircraft on campus to a list of "dangerous or high-risk activities," naming helicopters and hot-air balloons as examples, according to a copy of the district's school safety procedures.

"This is news to us," said Tom Garrity, spokesman for the Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which begins its annual show Saturday. "Balloons (in the past) would land on a regular basis around schools."

Garrity said pilots and crews are often recognized at the fiesta for giving tethered rides at schools. …
