City Consultants Say 14,000-Seat Venue Would Meet Area's Needs

Consultants for the city are recommending that officials consider a smaller arena than Mayor Jim Baca wants.

A 14,000-seat multipurpose arena would serve Albuquerque's needs, consultants said Thursday.

Baca said the city should build an arena with no fewer than 18,000 seats. The Pit holds about 18,000, and the home of Lobos basketball won't last forever, he said.

"There is a big emotional attachment to the Pit, but sooner or later it will have to be redone," said Baca, who has long advocated building a Downtown arena that could seat 18,000 to 20,000 people. …
