Rio Rancho police said Wednesday they will not treat the findings of a human femur and hip socket in a dirt lot near Corrales as a homicide because not enough evidence exists.

Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Francis said a child playing in the dirt lot near the intersection of Meadowlark Lane and Sara Road found the femur, which police turned over to the state Office of the Medical Examiner.

"Yesterday, they determined it was a human femur bone and possibly that of a very large man," Francis said.

A team of anthropologists from the University of New Mexico on Wednesday afternoon excavated the site and then found what they believe is a human hip socket. …
