Burn in Manzanos Opposed.

Some area residents are opposed to a 3,800-acre prescribed burn being planned by the U.S. Forest Service in the Manzano Mountain wilderness.

The burn would take place on the west side of the Manzanos between Canon de Salas and Canon Monte de Abajo in Valencia and Torrance counties.

The Mountainair Ranger District proposal states that a control line on the eastern boundary would be created "when there is sufficient snow on the slopes," which would be in late fall or early spring, "under specific conditions of humidity, temperature and wind."

The lower-slope pinon and juniper, which need a hotter fire, would be burned in the summer under specific conditions. …
