Why Not A Blimp Derby?

The annual balloon fiesta kicks off this weekend down in Albuquerque, but I'm not sure why.

To be precise, it's the Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. But whatever you call it, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Call me a killjoy, but what's the attraction?

The balloon fiesta basically amounts to a showcase of an outdated, inefficient mode of transportation. It's like staging the Indianapolis 500 horse-and-buggy race, or some kind of blimp derby or rowboat race.

Even the 2000 balloon fiesta's official brochure hints at the odd nature of the event, calling it "the world's largest, most photographed, most whimsical sporting spectacular. …
