Merger Stirs Fears Of Tax Increases.

Less of a Political Voice Also Raised as Concern

Taxes and political representation were among the main topics of concern at a town-hall meeting Saturday about the proposed consolidation of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County governments.

The meeting, held at Los Vecinos Community Center near Tijeras, was prompted by Constitutional Amendment 1 on the November ballot.

The measure asks voters statewide to give Bernalillo County home-rule powers similar to those of a city. It also asks voters to allow the county and Albuquerque to proceed toward the creation of a unified urban county government.

Tax structure is one of the main issues that will have to be addressed if voters clear the way for the unification process to begin, said Brian McDonald, former head of the University of New Mexico's Bureau of Business and Economic Research. …
