State Explains Safety Features

Trucks started hauling low-level nuclear waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad in the summer of 1999 after more than 10 years of strong opposition and lawsuits.

And those trucks roll through Torrance County on a regular basis.

Representatives from the state Department of Public Safety brought one of the specially designed waste-transport trucks to Estancia on Friday to demonstrate the measures that are being taken to ensure the waste is being moved safely.

The presentation in Estancia was one of many the state has made over the past several years to allay fears about radioactive waste traveling the state's roads, said John Shea, DPS program manager for WIPP Safe Transportation. …
