State Wants To Merge Centers

The Rio Arriba County Commission opposes a state plan to merge four 911 centers in Rio Arriba and Taos counties into one joint dispatch center serving both counties.

The proposed consolidation "would not benefit the citizens of either county due to the large geographic area, communication problems due to terrain and distance, lack of towers and repeaters and ultimately could result in loss of life," according to a resolution approved Sept. 28.

The state Department of Finance and Administration commissioned a study that recommended reducing the number of 911 dispatch centers statewide from 72 to 25 to save an undetermined amount of money. …
