Union in Conflict Over Reform Plans

The Albuquerque Teachers Federation has quit the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce in protest over the chamber's education proposals.

The chamber in June called on the Legislature to reorganize the way schools are governed, raise standards and transform teacher pay scales to reflect education level and learning quality.

The teachers' union dislikes many of the chamber's ideas, said Ellen Bernstein, the union's president.

"At present, it appears the chamber's education agenda is very different from, and at cross purposes with, the union's agenda," Bernstein wrote in a memo to the chamber announcing the decision to cancel the union membership. …
