Water Issues Will Shape City, Mayor Says.(Metro & New Mexico)

* Attracting businesses, redeveloping Downtown also key to economy, according to Baca

Albuquerque enjoys a growing reputation as a good place to do business, Mayor Jim Baca said Wednesday, but the city's vitality relies on its aquifer and water rights.

"The water issues the city is going through right now are really going to shape this city in the future," Baca told city employees in his annual State of the City address at the KiMo Theatre.

Downtown redevelopment and a lively cultural scene also will help the city develop a thriving economy, he said.

Baca often has sounded a warning about water issues since drought threatened to dry up portions of the Rio Grande, threatening the survival of the endangered silvery minnow. …
